More than a game: What the ABI Football group represents
In our newest video feature, Director and Occupational Therapist Ryan Price speaks with Kyrel about his experience in our ABI Football Group — and his reflections highlight just how transformational the group has become.
For Kyrel, football is the starting point — but the impact runs much deeper.
He describes the sessions as a way to reset mentally, to channel his focus and maintain motivation in everyday life. The structure of training, the rhythm of teamwork, and the commitment to showing up each week all contribute to rebuilding confidence and consistency.
Connection is another powerful theme. Being part of a team of people navigating similar challenges creates a space where communication feels safer and more natural. Kyrel talks about learning from others’ strengths, gaining perspective, and developing empathy through shared experience. There’s an understanding within the group that doesn’t need over-explaining — and that shared understanding builds trust.
The team is now preparing for a significant milestone: an 11-a-side match in a live stadium setting. For many players, this represents more than competitive football. It’s visibility, inclusion, achievement, and a moment to stand proudly in front of a crowd. A powerful step forward in their rehabilitation journey.
If you’d like to support the team and experience the atmosphere on the day, tickets are available here:
We’re also inviting organisations and community partners to connect with us regarding sponsorship opportunities. Supporting inclusive sport means investing in confidence, independence and long-term recovery.
